"Day of the Triffids" Original Lobby Card #1. "Day of the Triffids" aka "Invasion of the Triffids" is a 1962 film adaptation of the great book by John Wyndham. Triffids are semi-intelligent man-eating plants that can travel and communicate with each other. They are a minor threat until most of humanity is struck blind after watching a dazzling meteor shower. The newly blinded people cannot defend themselves from the killer plants, so they rely heavily upon the few sighted people who, for whatever reason didn't watch the meteor shower. Great movie, though it's never been remastered and released in decent quality on DVD. Sadly, the VHS is the best quality out there. The British mini-series from 1981 is even better than the film and a near perfect adaptation of the novel. The latest (2009) mini-series is a poor adaptation but still fun to watch. The CGI triffids are pretty cool. Here's the trailer for the movie. 1962.
"Twelve Monkeys" Original Advance One Sheet. For recent films, more thought is often put into advance one sheets than regular one sheets. Usually, the regular one sheets consist of a collage of the actor's heads or something unimaginative like that. That's why I like advance one sheets like this one. Plot: In the future, a virus of unknown origin has wiped out most of humanity. The ones still alive live underground. Scientists have invented time travel but it's an unstable system, so they decide to use "volunteer" prisoners. They are sent back to the time before the virus to try and find clues to it's origin. Then, other officials will travel back and stop it's release. If successful, the prisoner will receive a full pardon for their crimes. Bruce Willis stars as James Cole, a prisoner who's sent back and who begins to see stencils appearing in subways and alleys about an "Army of the Twelve Monkeys." Here's the trailer. 1995.

"The Green Slime" Original Half Sheet. I used to have this on VHS. Not sure what happened to it. Some astronauts who live on a space station blow up an asteroid that's heading towards Earth. They unknowingly contaminate the station with a green substance that quickly grows into men in rubber suits. Great fun. Here's the swingin' theme song set to action from the movie. It's from 1968. Once again, no Region 1 DVD release. There's a cut Japanese 16:9 DVD with no English track.

"Burn Witch Burn" Original Half Sheet. I just watched this movie last week. Actually, the version I got is the PAL dvd called "Night of the Eagle." It's pretty cool. A man realizes his wife has been practicing witchcraft. She's got weird stuff stashed all over the house, like a spider in a little box in the clothes drawer. Well, he makes her burn it all. She says she won't be responsible for what happens without her "protection." It turns out there's another witch out to get him and things start going downhill fast. Check it out if you can find it. Originally, you could get "Burn Witch Burn" on one of the first Midnite Movies but I haven't seen that one available for years.

"Parasite" Original insert. Well, let's see: There was a nuclear holocaust and years later there's a guy with a parasite that's sort of a rip off of "Alien" except it's in his stomach. Then there's a girl who REALLY likes lemons. Yeah, don't ask me. One good point is that it has a really young Demi Moore. Trailer Here. 1982.
"Blood Beasts Battling over Female Flesh!" Hammer Films' "Lost Continent" Original Half Sheet. This movie has giant crabs, man (actually woman) eating kelp, people using weird helium balloons to walk on floating seaweed, and Spanish Conquistadors. Definitely worth a watch if you haven't seen it. It was banned in Finland. Here's the trailer. 1968.
"Piranha II: The Spawning aka Flying Killers" Original One Sheet. I bought this one for the great art, and for the fact that it's James Cameron's directorial debut. (He was hired on as an effects guy and took over when the other director quit.) Those crazy scientists are at it again. This time they've crossed a regular piranha with a flying fish. This movie also has the recurring theme of the beach front resort owner who doesn't want to close regardless of the threat to tourists. Pretty much an open buffet for the piranha. They even fly through windows to get people. Ha ha. Here's the Japanese trailer. 1981.

"Eliminators" Original One Sheet. I just finished watching this gem. Lots of great action, a kung fu specialist fighting cro-magnon men, a young Denise Crosby, time travel, a little robot buddy for comic relief, and even a mad scientist thrown in for good measure. The "mandroid" driving around on his tank tracks, shooting laser beams is great. Check it out if you can find it on VHS. Trailer here. 1986.
"Fathom" Lobby Card #3. "The world's most uncovered undercover agent." Fathom Harvill in her parachuting garb from the beginning/title sequence. In case you missed it, here's the trailer. Fathom is an American skydiver touring Europe. She meets a Scottish agent who's working with American intelligence and decides to help him find a bomb triggering mechanism before it's too late. I like how she changes into a different skimpy outfit or bikini in nearly every scene.
Here's the previously posted insert. 1967.

"Logan's Run" original half sheet. The 1976 film adaptation of William F. Nolan's book. I've read the book and have seen the film several times and I think it translates well. In a future society the resources and population are strictly contained by the fact that most people go willingly to execution when they reach the age of 30. Those who buck the system and try to run for their lives are called "runners," and the men who chase them are called "sandmen." The film is the story of a sandman and a female runner who run together. Trailer. There was a TV show in 1977 too. (Never released on home video, but you might be able to find recordings.)

"Operation Kid Brother" aka "OK Connery" half sheet. Pretty cool cheesy James Bond rip off. Unfortunately, the only version I could find was the MST3K. Neil Connery actually IS the kid brother of Sean Connery. Supposedly, Sean Connery was pretty pissed about the fact that they took advantage of Neil and talked him into this movie just because of the popularity of his brother's name. Some original Bond girls and villains are in it too. Put this out on DVD! Here's the trailer. From 1967.
"Mission Mars" original insert. American astronauts discover the body of a Cosmonaut and a strange talking orb on Mars. All I know about this movie is that one of the main cast, Nick Adams (allegedly) killed himself the same year it was released. Trailer here. It's from 1968.

"Metalstorm: The Destruction of Jared Syn" British Quad. Silly 3-D sci-fi from 1983. One of Kelly Preston's first movies she'd probably rather forget. Post-apocalyptic mutants, lasers, and an indecipherable story. My only british quad, just because of the great art. The U.S. 1-sheet is terrible. Here's the trailer. Watch how often stuff is poking or flying at the camera, and just in the trailer.

"Deadly Blessing" One-Sheet. "Pray you're not blessed." Well, they can't all have good taglines. A supposedly good Wes Craven flick about an Incubus in an Amish community. I'm going to have to try to find this movie. Trailer here. Yep, that's a young Sharon Stone. 1981. UPDATE: I finally got ahold of a copy of this movie. It's pretty cool. Ernest Borgnine is perfectly within his element as the strict Amish father. Why do corny heavy metal bands always steal the name of good horror movies?

"Voyage to the End of the Universe" insert. This movie is the cut version of the russian film Ikarie-XB. Good sci-fi, but not as good as the poster art. From 1963.

"Cabinet of Caligari" Half Sheet. I just liked the art and have never seen the movie. 1962.

Sunday, June 6, 2010

"Jack of Diamonds." Great half-sheet with art by Robert McGinnis. "From the rooftops of Paris to the penthouses of New York... he takes only the best jewels and the most beautiful women!" I'd love to see the movie but it's never been released on home video. Anyway, here's the trailer. 1968.
Halfsheet for "Duel in the Jungle." Shot on location in Rhodesia, an American insurance investigator looks into the strange death of a diamond broker who drowned while diving for diamonds off the African coast. I've never seen the movie since it's not available. 1954.
Two 1-sheets: "Dr. Goldfoot and the Bikini Machine" (1965) and it's sequel "Dr. Goldfoot and the Girl Bombs." Dr. Goldfoot (Vincent Price) has an army of bikini-clad robots that he uses to different ends.
"Policewomen" Original Half Sheet. "Before James Bond ... There Was Lacy Bond." Pretty cool art on an original half-sheet. The movie's a lot of fun too. A lady cop infiltrates an all-female criminal gang. Kind of funny that she's supposed to be a police officer but she's always karate chopping people. 1974. Trailer!

Great samurai western movie. "Red Sun" aka "The Magnificient Three." Original half-sheet. 1971.
Extremely rare horizontal video poster for "Showgirls." I've never been able to find a listing or even mention of this poster. I think the art is superior to the vertical original 1 sheet. The movie is so bad it's earned a cult status.
"The Descent": One of my all-time favorite movies. The first is an advance 1 sheet featuring fantastic art reminiscent of Salvador Dali's "In Voluptate Mors." (Google it. Now.) Also, the british double sided video poster. The movie earned the nickname "Six Chicks With Picks." Here's the trailer.
"There are 2 kinds of women... all the rest and Raquel Welch." Wow. A true statement indeed. Fathom and Goldengirl inserts. Fathom is actually a great film too. (I have a nice lobby card of Fathom too that I'll post at a later date.) Fathom trailer.

Two half-sheets from 2 great "Ecological Disaster" movies where mother nature turns against us. Giant ants in one, and lots of giant animals in the other. There's even a scene where a guy is getting pecked by a giant rooster.
The first time I've ever bought a poster for the tagline. You have to admit it's good. (It's a war picture. 1967.)

Two 1sheet posters from the '80s. I looked all over and can't find anything about "Forbidden Lessons."
